The INTA Space Programs and Space Optics Departments lead the internal project “ProtoRaman”: Prototyping and integration of Raman instrumentation for space applications.
This is presented as a line of internal research, which gives continuity to the different INTA contributions to planetary exploration missions, using Raman spectroscopic instrumentation: RLS for the ESA ExoMars project; RAX for JAXA’s MMX project, and the development of PHOENIX prototypes for PANGAEA, for the upcoming human exploration on the Moon.

The research to be carried out by the applicant will focus on the future development of a remote Raman spectrometer for planetary exploration applications, capable of working at distances between 0.5 and 10 meters; its possible combination with instruments already developed at INTA, such as proximity Raman spectrometers or LIBS spectrometers. In addition, it must develop a preliminary specification, and define a plan to raise the TRL of the instrument, which identifies the potential of an instrument of these characteristics for future planetary exploration missions.
RESEARCH TASKS TO BE CARRIED OUT:
- Study of the state of the art in Remote Raman instrumentation for space.
- Identification of potential planetary exploration missions, where Remote Raman
instrumentation can be shipped, with special attention to the Icy Moons of the Gas Giants. Selection of scientific objectives - Specification and initial configuration of a Remote Raman prototype.
- Definition of the plan to reach TRL4-5 in this prototype.
- Implementation of the instrument, obtaining results, and identification of the degree of compliance in achieving the scientific objectives set.
