The Comunidad de Madrid (CAM) has granted prestigious scholarships to two doctoral candidates, Luigi Marra and Raúl Quiben, both enrolled in our doctoral programme.
These scholarships represent a significant commitment to supporting the next generation of academics during their doctoral studies, training, and research endeavors. CAM’s investment directly fuels innovation and propels the research careers of promising young scientists.
Luigi Marra‘s research focuses on the complex field of turbulence flows. Turbulent flows exhibit intricate nonlinear chaotic multiscale behavior, presenting challenges for the implementation of closed-loop control techniques despite their practical importance. His PhD thesis is dedicated to tackling this challenge by introducing innovative and highly robust model predictive control techniques tailored for turbulent flows. These techniques must effectively contend with measurement noise and model uncertainty resulting from the truncation of model dynamics. Luigi’s thesis was also funded by the PREDATOR-CM-UC3M project.

Meanwhile, Raúl Quiben‘s research is a response to the primary challenge of mitigating air transport emissions and addressing climate change. Recognizing hydrogen (H2) as a viable, long-term sustainable solution for the aviation industry, his PhD objectives revolve around the development of techniques for design optimization and trajectory optimization for the future generation of hydrogen-powered aircraft, all with a focus on mitigating climate impact. Raúl’s work presents a promising opportunity to simultaneously reduce the harmful effects of aviation emissions, encompassing both CO2 and non-CO2 emissions. Raúl’s thesis was also funded by the Hydrogenating CM-UC3M project.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Luigi and Raúl for this remarkable achievement!
